A key innovation for the Trust over a number of years is that all our settings deliver Philosophy for Children (P4C) to children in all year groups.

P4C is an approach to learning and teaching that explores the big ideas that arise in all areas of education and in life. It uses philosophical dialogue and enquiry to help learners to think, to speak, to listen, to learn and to live together more harmoniously. Children are encouraged to be caring and compassionate, to think with others and to think for themselves.

Through P4C, The Societas Trust aims to develop children’s oracy, problem solving, creativity and communication skills, alongside their self-esteem and academic achievement. As stated by the Oracy Commission in 2024:

‘Now more than ever, we need our young people to be equipped to ask questions, to articulate ideas, to formulate powerful arguments, to deepen their sense of identity and belonging, to listen actively and critically, and to be well-steeped in a fundamental principle of a liberal democracy—that is, being able to disagree agreeably.’

Ofsted have also noted the success of this approach, stating in their report: 'Pupils are caring, collaborative, critical and creative thinkers. They love to discuss their ideas and understand the opinions of others'. (Ofsted, May 2023).

The video above is of a P4C session in action, and captures the children's and staff's thoughts on why P4C is so important to them, how it aids their learning and helps them gain a better understanding of the world, of each other and of themselves.
